Frequency-domain pulse measurement

Measuring gated-CW pulses in the frequency domain is not straightforward especially when considering weak signals. Using a spectrum analyzer as demodulator, the envelope of the pulses can be carried out. However, the recommended setup requires a signal generator with a trigger output which is usually not a native feature. To overcome that issue, a low frequency generator is added. With a robust model of the spectrum analyzer behavior, accurate measurements of peak signal amplitude only 1 dB above noise floor is achievable.

RF cavity characterization

RF / microwave cavities are of key interest for their use as oscillators, filters and also to expose devices to High Power Electro-Magnetics. One of the key parameter of a RF Cavity (RFC) is its quality factor Q linked to E-field strength that could be reached inside the RFC. However, as soon as a device is introduced inside, both resonant frequency and Q factor are modified. We show here how an optical E-field probe can be used to characterize a RFC while inducing almost no interference.

Time-Domain Pulse Measurement

Measurement of single or repetitive pulses in the time domain would be straightforward using an infinite bandwidth measurement system as the spectral content of pulses spread usually over an ultra wide band. However, in the real life, both sensor and digitizer present finite bandwidths and the choice of both sensor and digitizer is not straightforward. We illustrate through a few examples how to get the best trade-off when making E-field measurements of pulses.
